Paddington Terrace
Paddington
Land of the Gadigal and Birrabirragal
The brief
Inject the narrow, dark and detached spaces of a typical terrace house with openness, sunlight and natural flow.
The result
A traditional terrace in the heart of Sydney’s leafy Paddington is now a bright, generously spacious home for modern living. Existing rooms were reconfigured to form an open plan living, kitchen and dining area with secondary spaces such as bathrooms and laundry relocated to the centre of the terrace to further maximize on space.
An expansive L-shaped deck wraps the rear kitchen and dining area, which eschews walls for tall, glass bi-fold doors and high windows that flood the space with light and conjure the magic of archetypal indoor-outdoor Australian living.
Smart design elements such as an island kitchen bench that steps down to extend into a dining table, and a plywood nook which houses a snugly fitted sofa and discreet storage, further serve to maximize the sense of openness and light.
The feeling
Dazzling and bright, cool, clean and minimal.
A white shade of pale.
“When you engage a great architect, you have to trust them and let them lead the way...I love that despite the relatively small footprint, we all have our own space when we need it.”
