Dark and atmospheric kitchens

Move over white kitchens. At this year’s Eurocucina show during Milan Design week – the global barometer for kitchen trends – the emerging aesthetic was towards darker tones of grey, moss and midnight blue with dark marble and timber, smoky glass and matt finishes.

The seamless kitchen  continued in popularity but with increasingly directional executions, progressing from handle-free cupboards and drawers to knock-to-open dishwashers, and integrated features such as sinks and barely visible induction cooktops incorporated into one long, unbroken surface of seductively sleek, stone or marble.

We also love the rise of the dining table as a physical extension of the kitchen island as seen above in the new Ratio kitchen by Belgian designer Vincent Van Duysen for Italy’s Dada. As open-plan living continues in popularity, kitchens are, more than ever before, becoming the heart of the home. We’re not only preparing our food here, we’re using it as dining room, office and family entertainment space.
